Details:
Utahraptor ostrommaysorum ( Utah thief ) 1/8th scale
. 21 inches long.
Background: Utahraptor was first discovered in 1992 in the same quarrie, the Yellow Cat, as Gastonia. It was the largest member of the dromaeosaur or 'raptor dinosaur family. It had more robust features than it's smaller cousins, and may have hunted by ambush. When first discovered, Utahraptor was a sensational find. At that time, Steven Speilberg was wrapping up production on the first Jurassic Park Movie. Speilberg felt that the velociraptors from Micheal Chritchen's book,at six feet long, were to small to be scarey on the big screen, so he swapped the sizes of the movie's Dilophosaurus with those of the 'raptors. The velociraptors were now a frightening twenty feet in length. There was only one problem; there were no known species of 'raptors that were even close to that size. As the movie moved forward to release, Paleontologists found Utahraptor. This amazing coincidence caused an international media blitz, and gave a fortune of free advertising to not only Jurassic Park, but to the paleontologists in Eastern Utah as well. There was even some initial talk of originally naming Utahraptor " Speilbergraptor ", but that obviously didn't take place.
